Temp Help Services Costs Trend Up

Staffing buyers are paying more for temporary staffing in the U.S. compared to last year, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The U.S. producer price index for “temporary help services” rose 1.58 percent year-over-year based on a three-month average of growth rates that included April, May and June. The three-month average growth rate in PPI has accelerated since April.

Looking at the monthly readings alone, the temporary help services PPI hit a reading of 132.2 in April, and edged down to readings of 131.4 in both May and June. All were above their levels from last year.

“Temporary help services” includes all businesses that supply workers to client businesses where the clients supervise the workers. It includes all segments of staffing.

Producer price indexes track the change in price received by service producers over time. The change in price is measured from the perspective of the seller, in this case staffing firms.
