UK: Sol changes boost Oil & gas sector

05 April 2013

Oil and gas firms facing chronic skill shortages have been given a boost by UK Government plans to relax strict immigration rules according to the Scottish based The Press and Journal.

Although as we highlighted in March, the number of potential UK posts open to skilled migrant workers will be reduced by around -270,000. Businesses should be able to recruit skilled engineers from outside Europe more quickly and easily after 20 job categories, including mechanical, production and electrical engineers, have been added to the shortage occupation list (Sol).

The Sol is a register of jobs exempt from strict immigration rules which limit employers from taking on skilled foreigners from outside the EU.

The move – to be introduced on the 6th April – has been welcomed by the oil and gas industry, which said it would help to unlock the sector’s potential.
