UK – Social Media needs to be used correctly, report warns

In its Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) Insights Report, Resource Solutions, a provider of RPO, identified a number of trends around cost containment, the rise in global deals and social media. The report also reveals an increased demand for relevant, real-time and accurate management information (MI) as companies look to maintain control and visibility, at the same time as maximising value from their recruitment spend. 

Resource Solutions, which is part of the Robert Walters Group, predicts that 2012 will see the following two trends: 

  • Increasing demand for global RPO, driven by increased efficiencies and enhanced visibility of spend and performance, improved ability to reach the best talent across all markets and reduction in time to hire. 
  • Changes in technology and the use of social media in recruitment; in particular, closer integration of social networking campaigns so that candidates have a seamless journey from the company’s careers site to its corporate LinkedIn page, Facebook page, Twitter feed and blog.

The report says that for 2012 “there will be a rise in demand from clients who want to secure their RPO on a regional or multinational basis. The drivers for RPO differ from company to company and also within the organisation itself. From an HR and business perspective, efficiencies and having the best model to reach talent is the principle rationale for global RPO, but in the current cost-conscious environment, procurement departments are likely to focus on the cost savings of multi-territory deals.”

The report also warned that social media needs to be used correctly for it to work properly as it is becoming an important recruitment tool. Hence the use of social media channels “may not be appropriate for all clients and, in order for it to achieve the desired outcome, it should be approached as part of a strategic recruitment campaign with the same level of scrutiny that any other media channel would be subject to,” the report states. 

It also highlights that pressures on costs will continue as “tough economic conditions” have heavily affected the recruitment industry in 2011 and cost containment have been the norm last year.

Oliver Harris, CEO at Resource Solutions, said “We know that the economic conditions are challenging, and our report highlights the increased appetite from our clients for innovative and targeted cost containment measures that don’t sacrifice quality and for detailed and real time metrics to ensure managers are able to accurately monitor spending on –for example – recruitment and the contingent workforce.”

He added, “With 150 million professionals using LinkedIn and Facebook’s users predicted to reach the one billion mark this year, companies are also keen to utilise social networking channels and to explore how these can improve access to talented candidates.
