UK — Run on temporary employees for the Christmas period

02 October 2009

Retailer Marks&Spencer has just announced plans to recruit 20,000 additional staff for Christmas. Food retailers Sainsbury's and ASDA will equally be looking to take on 20,000 extra staff each. Tesco will do the same but have not announced numbers yet. Boots the chemist will take on 7,000 for the Christmas period.

Lindsay Page of staffing agency McCarthy Recruitment told Retail Week on the subject, "each year there is a pool of candidates applying to all of the different retailers offering temporary work. Employers have to fight if they want to get the best recruits."

Other organisations are equally planning to take on large numbers of temporary workers before the Christmas period. A spokeswoman from job board Monster said, "Royal Mail is already recruiting for Christmas workers and has been doing so since last month. This is not unusual."
