UK - Part-time jobs up 44% in the past year as key industries return to growth

12 August 2014

The number of part-time jobs available in the UK has seen a dramatic rise in the past year.  Figures released by reed.co.uk report +44% more part-time job vacancies in July 2014 than at the same point last year.

The top three growth sectors for part-time jobs advertised are: Manufacturing (+163% YOY); Retail (+120%); and Construction & Property (+106%).  All regions of the UK have experienced growth in numbers with the North West of England seeing the highest rise in part-time jobs at +87% in the past year.

Commenting on the latest figures, James Reed, Chairman of reed.co.uk commented: ”this dramatic increase in the volume of part-time vacancies is very encouraging for jobseekers and businesses alike. A business ramping up through part-time roles suggests a gradual and cautious approach to staffing, maintaining flexibility while still focused on job creation.

“Overall, it’s a very buoyant labour market.  During each week in July, we saw over a million applications and we have over a third more job vacancies on our site than at the same point a year ago. And with growth visible in such sectors as Manufacturing, Construction and Retail – many of the hardest hit during the recession - it’s an indication of key industries returning to growth.”
