Recruitment agencies may be in danger of having their reputations sullied indirectly by social networks, new research suggests.
A recent survey by online jobsite CareerBuilder.co.uk reveals that 53% of employers use social networks to screen job candidates, and the findings on those candidates were not always positive.
Employers are, in part, doing the extra checks because the information is readily available for many candidates. But the high percentage also points to a possible disillusionment in employers' relationships with recruitment agencies.
Traditionally a recruitment agency's role is to screen candidates and send an employer only those who are most suitable and fitting for the job in question. However, the information which employers are turning up from their social network research could begin to make agency methods look slack if candidates are being put forward who are later found to be unsuitable.
The survey revealed that 38% of candidates lied about their qualifications, 31% showed poor communication skills, 13% made discriminatory comments, 9% bad-mouthed their previous employer and 8% shared confidential information from a previous employer.
