The unemployment rate in the Netherlands in December 2011 amounted to 456,000 people being out of work, which makes up +5.8% of the workforce. According to The Central Bureau of Statistics, this figure has remained unchanged from November 2011.
In comparison, the unemployment rate in 2011 and 2010 averaged 5.4% and although unemployment was gradually reduced in that time period, unemployment figures started to go up again.
However, figures from the social security agency UWV show that both the number of registered job seekers and the number of those on unemployment benefits in December 2011 was higher than in the previous month. According to their statistics, the number of registered unemployed people amounted to 473,000 in December. That indicates a decrease of 17,000 from a year ago.
Compared with the previous month, the number of unemployed increased by about 10,000.
The number of those on unemployment benefits also went up in December by +1% to 270,000. The statistics show that there were 43,000 new people claiming unemployment benefits.
