Switzerland — Unemployment falls to 4.2% in March 2010

The State Secretariat for the Economy (SECO) today announces unemployment figures for March 2010. The number of jobseekers registered with the government's job centres (ORP) has fallen by -6,967 individuals compared to February 2010.

The unemployment rate has fallen from 4.4% in February 2010 to 4.2% in March 2010. Compared to March 2009 unemployment was up by +23.2% or 31,319 job seekers.


Youth unemployment (15 to 24 year olds) fell by -7.3% or -2,122 job seekers to 26,752 jobseekers. Compared to March 2009 youth unemployment was up by +20.9% or +4,624 job seekers.

The total number of job seekers registered with the ORPs was 231,497 in March 2010. The number of vacant jobs advertised by the ORPs was up by +2,170 month-on-month in March 2010 to 16,965.

According to preliminary data from the unemployment benefit offices (Caisses de Chomage) 2,287 job seekers have reached the end of their unemployment benefit entitlement in January 2010.
