Confronted with rising unemployment, several politicians are calling for a return to quotas for immigrant workers to protect the indigenous population of Switzerland in the workplace.
Charles Belaz, Managing Director of Manpower Switzerland told Le Temps "I can assure you that if we could find employees in Switzerland we wouldn't have to go across the border and hire them abroad. It is more difficult and more expensive to hire foreigners."
"The shortage of qualified workers in this country continues to exist in spite of the unemployment. The jobs, which have been lost are simply not the same as the ones we have on offer. We don't have qualified crane drivers in this country or qualified bricklayers, not even to mention health service staff."
