Switzerland – Quarterly employment sees weak growth as prospects look dim

25 May 2012

Swiss employment was up marginally in the first quarter according to the latest employment barometer published today by the Swiss Federal Statistics Office (BFS). But employment prospects and the amount of open vacancies have dropped.

Seasonally adjusted figures show a weak rise of employment which was up by +0.3% when compared to the previous quarter while the amount of open vacancies dropped by -9% over the course of one year.

Industries that profited from a boost in employment include the ‘production of computers and clocks’ as well as the construction industry. On the other hand, the hospitality sector saw a year-on-year drop of -3.5%.

The BFS said that companies did not report more difficulties in recruiting staff as this remained more or less flat, seeing only a minor quarterly increase of +0.1%. But the finance and insurance sector, as well as the information and communication industry had more troubles finding skilled staff.

All regions saw a rise in employment but the BFS noted that employment prospects have dropped for the third consecutive quarter although employment should still marginally rise in the next quarter.
