CEO of Swedish staffing firm Poolia, Monika Elling, received the support of the Board of Directors following damning criticism of her leadership in the media. In a candid article published yesterday looking at various managers’ management skills, Swedish newspaper Chef described Ms Elling as inconsistent, illogical, and indiscriminate.
After speaking to at least 30 people, the article quotes unnamed sources reportedly working, or having previously worked, with Ms Elling throughout her career. Described as having no understanding of the company, its strategy, or its employees, Ms Elling’s reputation is spared no punches, personally or professionally. She is accused, among other things, of causing confusion, scolding staff in front of others and having no strategy or clear vision.
But Poolia founder, chairman, and principal owner Bjӧrn Ӧrås swiftly responded to the article reiterating his and the Board’s support of Ms Elling. “Monika Elling has completed the restructuring programme approved by the Board. It has been a task she tackled with great determination. The role of the CEO sometimes involved making unpopular decisions.”
“The restructuring process Monika Elling carried out created a flatter organisation, but it has been painful for the affected individuals. Poolia was forced to make major cuts due to the recession. Thanks to these fast and powerful market adjustments, losses have been limited and Poolia returned to profitability. The measures taken by the CEO have positioned the business to meet the growing demand when the economy picks up.”
The CEO also has defenders among her employers. One unnamed source was quoted as saying, “I have worked with Monica for many years and I think she is inspiring. You can tell that she likes to run a business and it is infectious. I have never had management problems”.
Poolia supplies permanent and temporary staffing services to finance, administration, IT and engineering sectors. The firm is ranked among the 10 largest staffing firms in both Sweden and Scandinavia.
