Despite a record high unemployment rate of over 5 million, Spain is projected to benefit from the busy Easter period this month. Randstad expects to sign 152,000 contracts across the country in March, an increase of +1% from a year ago.
The hospitality and tourism sectors will generate most jobs, the recruiter said. “These forecasts provide some optimism for the current situation on the labour market,” said Randstad. The government recently posted data showing that the number of unemployed people rose above the five million mark for the first time since records began.
Hiring activities in March will vary across the country with Catalonia (28,300), Madrid (26 200) and Andalusia (14,700) expected to show a large proportion of contracts in the run-up to Easter.
While Randstad estimates brighter recruitment prospects for March as Easter is coming early this year, the number of contracts signed in April is expected to be below last year’s.
