Spain - Internet now more important than personal contacts

03 October 2011

In the country where personal contacts were traditionally the most important 'medium' for finding a job, the internet has now taken over in terms of importance, according to new research carried out by staffing agency Adecco Spain, among 496 employers and 9,215 job seekers.

27% of employers say that the internet is the most important medium for advertising their job vacancies. 21% rely on personal contacts, 20% prefer staffing agencies and another 20% prefer the press. 16.8% prefer to promote staff internally.

Social networks have revolutionised the use of the internet as a medium for advertising jobs. 15.2% of companies say that they advertise their jobs on social networks.

However, the use of the internet varies strongly by industry. In telecommunications the web has a penetration level of 95%. In industry, penetration is 25.7% followed by the services sector with 16.7%.

74.8% of job seekers use corporate websites as their first port of call. 70.9% of job seekers try to use personal contacts and 65.1% take pot luck and send CVs to companies, which have not advertised job vacancies.
