According to the latest Bulletin on Labour Statistics (BEL) published by the Ministry for Labour and Immigration, there were 349 temporary employment agencies in Spain at the end of the first half of 2009, which is 3.8% less than in the same period of 2008.
During the same period temporary employment agencies placed 480,648 temporary employees in the Spanish market, 46.3% less than in the same period of the previous year.
742,343 temporary employment contracts were signed during the period, a fall of -36.6%.
The largest number of temporary employment agencies were registered in the wealthy Northern region of Catalonia with its capital Barcelona where 117 agencies were in operation during the period, followed by the capital Madrid with 108 temporary employment agencies.
Next in line were the regions around Valencia (88 agencies), Andalusia (72 agencies), Murcia (52 agencies) and the Basque Country (44 agencies).
