Singapore’s Association of Employment Agencies (Singapore), which represent the staffing industry in the country, is looking into increasing recruitment opportunities from Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The president of the organisation, K. Jayaprema, said it had sent a proposal to the Ministry of Manpower to approve the hiring of maids from Cambodia.
There are around 208,000 maids working in Singapore, but the country is facing a shortage of workers. That is why the association also wants to increase the number of workers coming from Sri Lanka to up to 1,000 in March this year.
The staffing federation has announced further plans to review recruitment of Bangladeshi workers and will revive talks with the local government.
Although maids are in high demand, Singapore has also seen a construction boom and will increase efforts to hire workers from Sri Lanka and the Philippines to meet demand, according to the Building and Construction Authority.
