The latest labour market data published by Statistics Portugal (Instituto Nacional de Estatisticas), the estimated unemployment rate reached 10.1% in the 4th quarter of 2009, an increase of 2.3 percentage points compared to the same quarter of 2008 and up by 0.3 percentage points when compared to Q3 2009.
The number of unemployed people is estimated to have reached 563.300, having increased by 28.7% from the same quarter of the previous year, and by 2.8% from the previous quarter.
The number of employed individuals decreased by -3.0%, compared with the same quarter of 2008, and increased by 0.1%, compared with the previous quarter.
The average unemployment rate for 2009 was 9.5%, an increase of 1.9 percentage points when compared with the previous year. The unemployed population reached 528.600 individuals, up 23.8% from the previous year whilst the employed population recorded an annual decrease of 2.8%.
