In an interview with Portuguese Press Agency Lusa, the President of the Association of Private Employment Agencies (Apespe) said that temporary employment has fallen by 20% in 2009 when compared to 2008.
Marcelino Pena Costa told Lusa "the [temporary employment] sector had a turnover of 800 million Euro in 2009 compared to 1 billion Euro in 2008."
"There was a general downturn in the sector, especially in the three sub-sectors of the car industry, civil construction and public works."
On the positive side, Pena Costa mentioned growth in the information technology sector and the food industry, which "in spite of the crisis maintained some stability."
The President of Apespe does not expect the economic upturn to happen in 2010. He said "we can see some green shoots but they are few and far between. The measures taken at the beginning of the economic crisis have not shown many results yet and we are still a bit nervous both on a national and an international level."
