Temporary staffing firms can offer a “gateway” to the international labour markets, according to the president of the Portuguese association of temporary employment agencies (APESPE). Joaquim Adegas, who has been heading APESPE since autumn last year, said jobseekers can benefit from working with staffing companies.
Portugal-based recruiters can offer jobs abroad, he said in a recent interview with Económico TV (ETV). They can help workers secure guaranteed salaries and accommodation abroad. But, he said, the government could ease bureaucratic burdens to help the industry and labour market.
“There are many opportunities outside the country that are not being exploited, not by an unwillingness of companies, but by bureaucratic difficulties, issues that could be overcome if the Portuguese government will go ahead with initiatives to facilitate this movement,” he said.
He also said that workers signing up with temporary staffing firms increase their chances of finding a permanent job. He said that temporary agency workers often receive equal pay to those of permanent workers. Assignments last on average four months and are often renewed, he added.
