Portugal — Social networking sites should be used with care say staffing agencies

01 February 2010

Recruitment firms and employers are increasingly using social networking sites in order to find the best candidates for the job, Diario de Noticias reports.

Amandio Fonseca of staffing agency Egor told the Portuguese daily "social networking sites like Linkedin and Star Tracker are excellent for finding job candidates. Facebook and other similar sites are too social and do not interest us."

However, Fonseca recommends that job seekers be careful about what they say on social networking sites, especially when it comes to comments about their current place of work. He mentions the case of employees of Portuguese airline TAP who have been invited by their employer to go on a course on 'training in good behaviour' after having made derogatory remarks about the airline on Facebook.

Pedro Amorim, Associate Director at staffing firm Hays Portugal, said "employers use [social networking] sites more and more and it is possible that when they look for professional information they might also come across personal information. There is another side to the coin and it is definitely a mistake to say negative things about your employer on these sites."
