Portugal — Hundreds of nurses desert the country

16 November 2009

Temporary employment agencies are luring health industry workers away from Portugal with the promise of tax free salaries, free accommodation and generous time off arrangements, the Portugal News reports.

Foreign recruiters who once looked to Scandinavia, the UK and Ireland are now turning to Portugal in order to staff the health services of the UK, Spain, Canada, Belgium, France and even Saudi Arabia.

Finland-based recruitment agency Professional Connections, which operates on an international level, said "we will have hired at least 100 Portuguese nurses by 2010." The agency is currently advertising for Portuguese health workers to move to Saudi Arabia.

Staffing agency CLR Health Job, which has a Portuguese partner agency, has just hired 15 professionals to work in hospitals around Barcelona and another five for Madrid. The agency is also looking for nurses to work in the UK.
Liliana Rodrigues, consultant for health and social care recruitment agency HCL, said "since 2008 more than 150 Portuguese [nurses] have been recruited to work in the UK."

Staffing agency Best Personnel Limited is currently in the process of hiring 50 nurses for the UK and Canada, where the average wage is in the region of 55,000 Canadian Dollars per annum.
