Agency temporary employees are more motivated and suffer less from stress than their permanent counterparts but 80% of them would still prefer to be directly employed by their final employer, according to new research carried out by the Psychology Department of Lisbon University.
The research reveals that agency workers see their work as an opportunity to meet people and to get training and professional experience, which is why they have higher levels of commitment and enjoy better well-being.
Maria José Chambel, Research Co-ordinator at Lisbon University commented to Jornal de Noticias newspaper “agency workers believe that their efforts will be rewarded by the final employer, including possibly with a permanent job some day. That is why they show more commitment.”
The research also found that, despite the fact that the majority of agency workers would rather work directly for their final employer, 50% would not mind continuing to work via their agencies.
The research also reveals that agency staff suffer less from stress than direct employees. Chambel continued “agency staff know that their position is not permanent so they don’t stress themselves out over job security”.
The President of the Association of Temporary Employment Agencies (Apespe), Marcelino Pena Costa welcomed the research. He said “The results show that there is no discrimination between agency staff and permanent staff in companies. They both get equal treatment and equal opportunities.”
