Norway — 31,000 fewer temporary workers employed in 2009

According to the latest figures published by the official government body Statistics Norway temporary employment was down by 31,000 in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the same period of 2008. This represents 8.1% of total employment in the Scandinavian kingdom.

50% of temporary employees in Norway work in education and the health and social services sectors, which were down by 1.5% and 1.7% respectively.


The overall unemployment rate was 3.1% and remained unchanged between the first and second quarter of 2009. Unemployment among men was up from 2.8% in the second quarter of 2008 to 3.4% in the same period this year.

Since the age group of 15 to 24 year olds grew by 13,000 their labour force participation rate fell by 1.8 percentage points between the second quarter of 2008 and the second quarter of 2009.
