Netherlands – Staffing firms improve housing for migrant workers

27 March 2013

The social partners in the staffing industry and the agriculture, horticulture and meat processing industries have worked together to improve the living standards of migrant workers in the country.

The FNV union today reports that the parties have jointly established a foundation to ensure that good quality accommodation is offered to migrant workers.

300,000 migrant workers travel to the Netherlands every year to find employment. An estimated half of them find work through a staffing company, the FNV said. Accommodation for these workers is usually arranged by companies or employment agencies.

A new certificate, the SNF certificate, will ensure that migrant workers live in adequate accommodation. The Dutch staffing industry already has t controls in place to check whether accommodation offered to migrant workers is appropriate. The new partnership will extend this to other sectors, the FNV said.
