Unemployment in the Netherlands has seen a monthly increase of by 6,000 in June taking the number of jobless people to 495,000, the latest figures by Statistics Netherlands show. However, the number of those seeking unemployment (WW) benefits in the month stayed flat at 291,000.
The unemployment increase has continued for 12 months and the current rate at 6.3% was up by +1.3% from a year ago. As in many other European countries, youth unemployment has increased considerably within the last year from 9.3% to 12.2% in June. Those aged 25 and over were less affected, Statistics Netherlands said. However, the number of WW benefits issued to those aged under 25 was 11,000, a +50% increase from a year ago.
Both men (6.2%) and women (6.4%) were equally affected by the rise in unemployment. The construction sector has seen a steep increase in job losses since last year – in June the amount of WW benefits in the sector was up by +46% to 14,000. However, the increase was “modest” in the public administration and manufacturing industry, the Statistics Office said.
