The latest unemployment figures published by the Ministry for the Economy of the tiny European Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (494,000 inhabitants) show that the unemployment rate in January 2010 had reached 6.4% or 15,137 job seekers.
Compared to December 2009, unemployment was up by 2.2%. Compared to January 2009, unemployment was up by 18.3% or 2,339 individuals. Seasonally adjusted unemployment in January 2010 was 5.9%.
Unemployment in a larger sense (including people who are on training schemes to enable them to find jobs) reached 7.4% in January 2010 or 18,495 individuals.
At the end of January 2010, 7,564 job seekers people resident in Luxembourg received unemployment benefit, an increase of 23.9% compared to January 2009.
