Italy — Unemployment in February 2010 estimated at 8.5%

The Italian Institute for Statistics (Istat) has published its latest estimates of employment and unemployment for the month of February 2010 based on a sample of 48,000 individuals in the country.

Seasonally adjusted employment figures are estimated to have reached 22,806,000 in February, down by -0.1% compared to the previous month and down by -1.7% compared to February 2009. The employment rate was 56.8%.
 
Unemployment is estimated to have reached 2,127,000 individuals or 8.5% in February 2010. Unemployment was up by +0.2% or +4,000 individuals compared to January 2010 and up by +16.2% or +297,000 individuals compared to February 2009.
 
Youth unemployment is estimated to have reached 28.2%, up by +0.8 percentage points compared to January 2010 and up +4 percentage points compared to February 2009.
 
The inactive population aged between 15 and 64 is estimated to have reached 14,933,000 or 37.8%, up by +13,000 individuals or +0.1% compared to the previous month and up by +251,000 individuals or +1.7% compared to February 2009
