Italy — Seasonally adjusted unemployment reaches 7.8%

The latest labour market statistics published by the Italian Institute for Statistics (Istat) reveals that seasonally adjusted unemployment in the third quarter of 2009 was 7.8%, up by 0.3 percentage points compared to the second quarter of 2009.

The number of employed persons was 23.01 million individuals down by -2.2% compared to the third quarter of 2008 or 508,000 individuals.

The employment rate among the 15 to 64 year olds is down from 59% in the first quarter of 2008 to 57.5% in the third quarter of 2009.

Unemployment was lowest in the North with 5.5% followed by the Centre with 6.9%. The highest unemployment rate was registered in the South (Mezzogiorno) with 12.4%.
