A new report by the research centre of the Monza and Brianza Chamber of Commerce based on information issued by Companies House (Registro Imprese) and the Italian Institute for Statistics (Istat) reveals that 125 staffing agencies had to close over the last year, 50% of which were temporary staffing agencies.
Turnover in the staffing sector is down by 150 million Euro when compared to 2008 when there were 4,546 staffing agencies in the country with 1,400 agencies in the wealthy Northern province of Lombardy alone.
The President of the Monza and Brianza Chamber of Commerce, Carlo Edoardo Valli, said "I believe that at this moment in time we need to sustain the level of employment and re-launch consumer consumption via a variety of policies such as the non-taxation of Christmas bonuses."
"The money families spend on consumption is the basis for the re-launch of our economy. This is a pre-condition for investments into companies."
4.4% of Italian companies use temporary employment agencies, 6.8% in the North-west of the country compared to only 1.3% in the South and the islands. In Lombardy, 7.6% of companies use temporary staffing agencies.
However, the most popular way of finding staff is still word-of-mouth. In all of Italy 38.7% of staff is still hired via personal contact and a further 15.1% via recommendations from friends and colleagues.
In the country with a huge North-South divide regional differences are only to be expected. Personal contacts and recommendations via friends and colleagues matter most in the South and the islands (48% and 17.8% respectively). In Lombardy, personal contacts only account for 31.5% of hirings. Recommendations by friends and family account for 13.2%.
