The government's labour agency BA today announces the latest labour market developments for December 2009 and the year 2009.
Month-on-month unemployment was up by 60,000 to 3,276,000. In the Western Federal States unemployment was up by 33,000 to 2,248,000 whilst unemployment in the Eastern Federal States was up by 28,000 to 1,027,000.
The unemployment rate in December is up by 0.2% compared to the previous month to 7.8%. For the whole year of 2009 unemployment was 3,423,000 or 8.2%, which represents an increase of 155,000 or 0.4% over 2008.
For the whole year of 2009 unemployment in the Western Federal States was 6.9% whilst in the Eastern Federal States it was 13%.
For the whole year of 2009 unemployment in the Western Federal States was up by 176,000 to 2,320,000 whilst unemployment in the Eastern Federal States was actually down by -20,000.
BA President Frank-J. Weise said "in spite of the deep recession the labour market has shown to be robust in 2009. Unemployment may be up compared to the previous year but nowhere near as much as we had feared."
