One of Germany’s largest trade unions, the United Services Union or ‘ver.di’, is going to enter negotiations with the temporary staffing industry to increase pay rates for agency workers. The negotiations are due to start in mid-August after major unions in the metal as well the chemical industries have recently announced higher salaries for temporary workers.
“Of course we are ready to determine with employers what surcharges for the temporary staffing industry in the services sector could look like,” said Andrea Kocsis of the union to the newspaper Wirtschaftswoche.
She said that agency workers who are on short assignments should also profit from higher pay rates. But it remains unclear which industry sectors will be covered. The union represents around two million members in sectors such as trade and the public sector.
