As the negotiations for the formation of a German coalition between the Christians Democrats and the Social Democrats continues, one of the themes of the discussion centres on the labour market. Discussion are on-going as the two parties attempt to reach an agreement before Christmas.
As the two political parties debate the issue, German recruitment firm Orizon decided to survey one important group that would be affected by the outcome – temporary workers.
In an anonymous online survey Orizon asked temporary workers: “What do you think will be the impact on you if the maximum contract period for work were to be limited by law?”
• 62% are afraid that they would suffer financially due to the loss of industry surcharges
• 74% are afraid of becoming unemployed because their employment would be terminated with a recruitment firm if they cannot be placed with another client company.
• 75% believe that they will be more stressed by more regular changes in their placements.
• 59% think that the possibility that they will be taken on permanently will not be any greater.
• On the contrary: 69.3% expect that companies will resort to temporary placements in order to secure flexibility.
Dr Dieter Traub, Managing Director of Orizon GmbH, commented: “The policy should trust that the assessment of temporary workers is realistic. Particularly because, unlike scientific studies, this impacts directly the lives of human beings. The results of our survey portray a different reality of temporary work than politicians want to make people believe.”
Temporary work has changed for the better since deregulation in 2004. It has an integral function that is readily apparent. Through the continuous improvement of tariff provisions, conditions for temporary workers have become more aligned with the rest of the labour market.
“We are on track to become a very attractive employer in a fast paced world,” Dr Traub added.
