A report by the Federal Statistics Office (Statistisches Bundesamt) reveals that the recent job losses among temporary employees were directly linked to their level of training, education and experience.
In the second quarter of 2009 the number of unqualified temporary labourers fell by -49% when compared to the second quarter of 2008. During the same period the number of unqualified temporary labourers who had undergone an induction programme already only fell by -34.4%.
The number of vocationally trained temporary workers fell by -20.5% during the same period and the number of vocationally trained temporary workers with relevant experience in the job fell by a mere -14.2%.
The number of temporary employees in management positions, however, rose by 0.4%.
Overall, temporary employment in Germany was down by -31% to 520,000 temporary employees in the second half of 2009 when compared to the same period last year.
The problem is that the majority of temporary employees in Germany have low qualifications. 74% are young males with little or no qualifications. 24% are younger than 25 years of age. A further 16% are between 26 and 30 years old. Only 4% have A levels (Abitur) and 3% are university educated.
