Germany — Job index up for the eighth consecutive month

31 March 2010

The latest job index for March 2010 (Stellenindex) published by the Federal Agency for Labour (BA) shows an increase in demand for the eighth month in a row.

The monthly index is up by +5 points from 133 in February 2010 to 138 in March 2010. Compared to March 2009 the index is up by four points.

After a continuous month-on-month fall in 2008 and the first half of 2009, the index has now reached the levels of March 2006 again.

However, since many companies have tried to maintain staffing levels during the economic crisis by adopting 'reduced working hours schemes', the current upturn in the labour market is likely to lead to a return to normal working hours of existing staff before large numbers of new staff will be employed.
