Germany — Growing income disparity between East and West

26 April 2010

Data published by the Statistics Office of the Federal State of Saxony (East Germany) reveals that the Eastern part of Germany is failing to catch up with West German income levels, news magazine Focus reports.

Income (salaries + capital gains + social benefits) in East Germany was on average 15,484 Euro compared to 19,838 Euro in the West.

Income growth figures show that instead of the Eastern Federal States catching up with the West, the disparity is growing. Income growth in Eastern Germany was +2.5% compared to +2.9% in West Germany.
