A new report published by staffing group Randstad and job portal www.regionsjob.com about employment in the farming and food industries reveals that whilst these sectors are the largest in the country with 412,500 employees in 2008 and a turnover of 162.9 billion Euro, they suffer from a bad image among the general public due to pre-conceived ideas about hard work and a general lack of understanding of the industry.
The report is based on research among 1,517 people who are working, have worked or want to work in the industries. 36% of interviewees are permanent workers, 15% are on fixed-term contracts and 42% are temporary workers.
48% work in the industry because they find their work interesting, 36% stated proximity of the workplace and 35% are interested in the specific product they work on.
86% of interviewees said they are happy with their work in spite of the sometimes hard working conditions in agriculture stating mainly factors such as group spirit and the interesting working environment.
69% of interviewees would recommend working in the industry to their friends and family.
