France — January unemployment rises moderately

According to the latest data published by the French job centres (Pole Emploi) the number of category A unemployed (see definitions below) in France was up by 0.7% to 2,664,600 in January 2010 compared to December 2009. Compared to January 2009 category A unemployment was up by +16.1%.

Category B and C unemployment reached 1,200,500. Category B unemployment fell month-on-month by -1.1% but was up by +8.5% year-on-year. Category C unemployment was up month-on-month by +0.3% and by +23.6% year-on-year.

The total number of unemployed in the categories A, B and C in France was 3,865,100. In France plus the French overseas dominions, A, B and C unemployment reached 4,103,100, an increase of +0.4% month-on-month and an increase of +16.4% year-on-year.

Unemployment classification by category:
A: Unemployed
B: Work for up to 78 hours per month
C: Work for more than 78 hours per month
D: Unemployed but not looking for a job
E: Unemployed with a job offer
