France — 2009 temporary employment fell to 1998 levels

The latest analysis published by the Ministry for Labour reveals that temporary employment fell by -26% or -447,300 individuals* in 2009 when compared to 2008. This took temporary employment in France back to 1998 levels.

Temporary employment had already fallen in 2008 compared to 2007, but at the much lower rate of -5.3%, which took temporary employment in France back to 2006 levels.


Temporary employment in industry fell by -36% in 2009 (-8.3% in 2008). In construction, temporary employment fell by -17.5% in 2009 (-5% in 2008). In the services sector, temporary employment fell by -18.1 in 2009 (-1.3% in 2008).

In 2009, 1.7 million individuals signed approximately 13.5 million temporary employment contracts. The average duration of a temporary employment placement fell by one day to 1.7 weeks.
