According to the Labour Force Survey for 2009, published by Statistics Finland (Stat) the employment rate in the Nordic country with a total population of 5.4 million, which had been rising for the four previous years, fell in 2009. The rate fell by 2.3 percentage points from the previous year and stood at 68.3% in 2009. The employment rate fell to the level where it was in 2005.
There were 2,457,000 employed people in Finland in 2009, a decrease of 74,000 people. This compares to 2008 where the number of employed individuals in Finland rose by 39,000.
Unemployment in 2009 rose to 8.2%, the same level as in 2005. The unemployment rate among men was 8.9% whilst the unemployment rate among women was 7.6%.
In 2009, the average number of unemployed persons was 221,000, which was 49,000 higher than in 2008. There were 122,000 unemployed men and 99,000 unemployed women. Compared to 2008, there were 37,000 more unemployed men and 12,000 more unemployed women.
