The latest unemployment figures published by the National Labour Office (ONEM) reveal that unemployment in October 2009 is up by almost 41,000 to 437,671 when compared to October 2008.
The largest increase was in the Dutch-speaking Flanders region, were unemployment was up by 28,000. The French-speaking Wallonia region registered an extra 8,317 unemployed whilst unemployment in Greater Brussels was up by 4,479.
On a monthly basis, however, the number of registered unemployed individuals was down by 6,800 when compared to September 2009.
Unemployment among the less than 25 year olds was up by 8,524 to 67,829 when compared to October 2008 but down by 2,591 compared to September 2009.
