Belgium — Private internet use during working hours reaches problematic proportions

23 April 2010

Research carried by research firm InSites on behalf of staffing agency Tempo-Team (previously Vedior) among 304 workers and 154 HR Managers, reveals that the private use of the internet during working hours has reached problematic proportions.

40% of interviewees admit to using the internet regularly for private reasons during working hours.

82% of employees say that their use of the internet is directly linked to their work but 25% use the web for internet banking, 21% for social media, 19% for sorting out their leisure time and 13% to organise their holidays.

62% of companies therefore have rules on internet use. 33% limit the use of the internet and 31% control the use of the internet during working hours.

However, there is also a positive angle because 45% of respondents said that they use the internet at home outside their working hours in order to sort out work-related issues.

42% of workers confirm that access to their professional e-mails and the internet in general enable them to carry out professional tasks from home and, in fact, work from home at times.
