Belgium – Chamber adopts bill on AWD which could be implemented by June

25 May 2012

The Belgian Chamber of Representatives adopted a bill yesterday which will implement the European Agency Workers Directive as early as June, a spokesperson of the Chamber confirmed to Staffing Industry Analysts today.

He said that negotiations in the Belgian Senate are still outstanding but these should not take longer than 20 days after which the bill will be formally signed by the King. Overall he estimated that the process should be completed by June or July, bringing Belgian law in line with European legislation.

This comes after the National Labour Council (NLC), which represents social partners such as unions and employers’ organisations, in Belgium had finally agreed with the Belgian Parliament to review regulations for temporary employment in January.

Federgon, the Belgian federation of employment agencies, currently estimates that in 2010 a total of 520,000 people have been employed at least once as temporary workers in the country. It is mainly young students, as well as those aged between 31 to 45 years who make up around two thirds of the temporary workforce. The value of the sector currenlty lies at €3.762 billion.
