"It is to be feared that this year will remain a difficult one for the labour market", said Rudolf Hundstorfer, Minister for Employment, after the publication of European unemployment figures by Eurostat yesterday.
The Minister told Oesterreich Journal "the good thing about the figures for February is that youth unemployment is hardly up compared to February 2009. The increase is a mere 0.4% or 199 people."
The number of job seekers who participate in professional training courses offered by the Austrian job centres (AMS) was up by 43.9% in February 2010 compared to the same month last year.
Hundstorfer commented "it is the aim of our 'Training Attack' to offer professional training courses to as many job seekers as possible in order to improve their chances in the jobs market once things get better."
"The actions the government has taken have led to the second lowest unemployment rate in Europe (5.3%, Netherlands has lowest rate with 4.2%). The government will continue to do everything to keep unemployment down", the Minister promised.
