Around the web – Demand for agency workers high at NHS

Demand for agency workers in the British healthcare sector has increased due to European legislation, the Daily Mail writes. According to health minister Dr Daniel Poulter, the reliance of the National Health Service on agency workers has risen in recent years because EU rules in 2009 stopped junior doctors from working more than 48 hours a week.

He said: “The European Working Time Directive (EWTD) has created problems for the National Health Service on a number of issues including increased reliance on locum doctors, reduced continuity of patient care, and poorer training for junior doctors.”
