Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE) has failed to meet its target of halving agency staff costs this year as the actual spend is exceeding last year’s €219 million, the Irish Examiner writes.
The paper claims that the average monthly cost of agency staff to September this year was €18.3 million. The HSE had pledged to significantly lower the volume of agency staff functions, targeting a reduction of up to 50% in 2012. Forecasts now expect spending of €220 million for 2012.
The introduction of the Temporary Agency Work Directive also had cost implications as it sets out equal pay rights for agency workers. Most money is spent on nurses. Read the whole article here.
