Around the Web – Indian Congress Party wants to abolish contract work

23 October 2012

One of India’s main political parties has vowed to abolish contract work in government jobs if it comes to power in the Gujarat region, IBNLIVE reports today. The Indian National Congress, also known as Congress, is a modern liberal party which has made the pledge.

Congress is led by Sonia Gandhi, the widow of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and is a member of the famous Nehru-Gandhi family.

“Congress will abolish contract system in state government offices and nearly 40,000 employees recruited on contract system in the last seven years would be made permanent,” said senior party leader Narhari Amin said.

“Contract employees recruited in various government offices are being exploited and not given full salary. Congress will abolish the contract system if it is voted to power in Gujarat,” the former deputy chief minister said.

The party also accused the state of not spending “a single rupee” on unorganised workers who make up a large part of the workforce in the country.
