Around the Web – Australian Recruitment Agencies allowed to sponsor overseas workers

12 March 2012

Recent changes in the law in Australia will allow recruitment agencies to function as sponsors of overseas workers which is expected to increase the number of temporary visas.

Previously, only companies that employed overseas workers were allowed to sponsor foreign workers under the 457 Temporary Visa Scheme, but now recruitment firms are granted that right too.

Adecco confirmed that it had recently secured a licence from the Government to hire 457 visa holders as employment agencies are increasingly looking to South-East Asia when it comes to sourcing personnel.

Adecco director of marketing and communications for Australia and New Zealand, Rick Khinda, said "There are some great, talented people across South-East Asia, across Europe now with its high unemployment. We're the sponsor, we payroll them and then we on-hire them to our customers."

"I think there will be a slow increase in the 457 visas, but I don't think there is going to be a big rush because you do have to position yourselves appropriately to obtain the licence. It will take some time before it happens,” he added.
