Real average weekly earnings rose 0.5% in August from July, according to preliminary, seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. An 0.3% rise in average hourly earnings and an 0.2% decline in the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers led to the increase. Average weekly hours were unchanged.

Average weekly earnings were $591.26 in August, before adjustment for seasonal change and inflation, compared with $570.83 in August 2006.

Data on average weekly earnings are taken from nonfarm payrolls.
