The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance rose 2.7% to 576,000 in the week ended Aug. 15 from the previous week's revised number of 561,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

The four-week moving average of claims rose 0.8% to 570,000 from the previous week's revised average of 565,750.
