Weekly earnings rise, full-time wages up

Real average weekly earnings rose by 0.1% in December from November, according to preliminary, seasonally adjusted data released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Earnings benefited from a 0.4% increase in average hourly earnings, which offset a 0.3% increase in the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers.

Average weekly earnings were $605.96 in December before seasonal adjustment and inflation, compared with $578.67 in December 2006.

For the United States' 108.3 million full-time wage and salary workers, the median weekly was $700 in the fourth quarter of 2007, up 2.6% year-over-year, the BLS said in another report released today.

And, in a third report released today, the BLS said that New York County in New York had the highest average weekly wage in the second quarter of 2007 at $1,540. Santa Clara County CA ranked second at $1,504 and Clayton County GA was third at $1,358.
