Web: Rule Would Let Hotels Hire Firms’ Contingents

May 15, 2012

Contractual prohibitions on Indianapolis hotels directly hiring contingent workers employed by hotels' contracting services — such as staffing firms — would not be allowed under a proposed new rule.

Indystar.com reported the new rule was introduced Monday night before the City Council, but the council did not yet formally discuss the proposed rule.

The new rule is being introduced in response to a dispute between workers and hotels, WTHR.com reported. Workers at a hotel cleaning service couldn’t be hired directly by the hotel from six months to a year after quitting the cleaning service. The time limit applied, in some cases, even if the worker sought employment at a different hotel than the one at which they worked while employed at the cleaning service if the service had a contract at both hotels.
